November 09, 2002 | Women's Hockey
Fifth-ranked women's hockey was upset, 5-3, by St. Cloud State at Capitol Ice Arena on Saturday.
It took just 1:12 for Wisconsin to take a 1-0 lead on Jackie Friesen's (Regina, Saskatchewan) team-leading fifth goal of the season. Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Saskatchewan) passed from the left point to Kathy Devereaux (Seaforth, Ontario) at the face-off dot to the right of SCSU goalie Brie Anderson. Devereaux's backhand shot was blocked, but Friesen picked up the rebound and scored the goal.
The Huskies knotted the game at 14:01 when Krista Simonson tallied. Carrie Holldorf fed Simonson cutting through the slot with a pass from behind the net.
Nikki Burish (Madison, Wis.) put the Badgers on top a second time with a goal at 6:36 of the second period. Burish took a pass from Sharon Cole (Bloomington, Minn.) down low, before stickhandling past one Husky defender and backhanding a shot for her fourth goal of the season. Wisconsin goaltender Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) got an assist on the play.
Abby Cooper answered for SCSU, redirecting Melanie Pudsey's centering pass, to tie the game at two at the 9:08 mark.
Erin McNamara then gave the Huskies their first lead early in the third period. MacMillan stopped McNamara's first shot, but the forward followed and stuffed the puck through MacMillan's stick during a scrum in front of the net. The goal came at 4:28.
The Badgers made the game even for the third time when Nicole Uliasz (Chalfont, Pa.) scored her fourth of the season at 7:42. Michelle Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) won the puck in the SCSU corner and passed back to the point to Uliasz. The sophomore skated into shooting position and slapped one past Anderson for the score.
But Ashley Stewart finally put a team ahead for good after taking a pass from Jennifer Swanson and streaking down the left side of the Badger zone. The UW defense backed in and Stewart fired a slap shot past MacMillan for the 4-3 lead.
St. Cloud State's Abby Cooper added an empty-net goal at 19:02 to seal the 5-3 victory.
The Badgers (5-4-1, 1-4-1 WCHA) hit the road next weekend and face No. 10 Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa. It will be the Badgers' first trip to the Keystone State.
