Mania Named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week
December 11, 2002 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The Big Ten conference named sophomore Adam Mania its Men's Swimmer of the Week Tuesday. Mania was honored for his record-setting performance at the Texas Invitational. It is the first Big Ten weekly honor of his career.
Mania (Hickman, Neb.) set two school records at Texas, swimming past Brendan Coyne's 100 yard backstroke record and Cory Miller's 200 back mark. Mania also swam NCAA automatic qualifying times in the 100 back (47.38) and as a member of the 400 medley relay. Mania's 200 back and 200 medley relay performances earned him NCAA consideration times.
A 2004 Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100 back, Mania's 100 back time currently ranks third in the nation behind Cal's Alex Lim and Texas ' Aaron Peirsol, according to Taper & Shave's College Quick 50. Peirsol is the world-record holder in the 200m back, long and short course meters, and won silver in the 200m back at the 2000 Olympic Games.
Mania is the third different Badger to receive Men's Swimmer of the Week this year. Freshman James Wike (Sterling, Ill.) won for his efforts at UW 's two home meets and junior Matt Marshall (Chico, Calif.) is a two-time award winner this year.
