Badger Openweights Compete at Eastern Sprints

The Wisconsin openweight crew completed its 2002 season with titles in the varsity and novice four races at the Eastern Sprints to highlight its Sunday on the Cooper River.
The Badger varsity four went 7:18.4 to win defeat second-place Princeton by over four seconds in the 15-team race. Cornell (7:27.20), Virginia (7:31.0) and Boston University (7:48.80) completed the top five.
The UW novice also won its event with a time of 8:40.6. Syracuse, MIT, Northeastern and Rutgers also competed in the race. The Orangemen's time of 8:52.5 was the only other boat under the nine-minute mark for the event.
The remaining Badger boats raced in petite finals including the second novice eight. The boat won its petite final to finish seventh. Wisconsin rowed the course in 7:29.8. Cornell's time of 7:14.1 won the overall race title.
In the varsity eight, Wisconsin took fourth in the petite final and 10th out of 18 boats overall. The Badgers finished the race in 6:40.7. Brown won the event in 6:21.1.
The Badger second varsity eight finished ninth of 16 boats with a 6:50.7, while the novice eight was 10th with a time of 7:10.9 in the petite final.
In the overall point standings for the Willing Point Trophy, the Badgers earned 48 points to finish seventh. Princeton collected 71 points to win the overall title. Brown with 65 points, Virginia with 64 points, Yale with 62 points, Radcliffe with 60 points and Cornell with 56 points finished ahead of the Badgers.
