The Wisconsin women's openweight crew raced at the Lexus Central-Southern Sprints, Sunday, on Melton Hill Lake.
The Badger varsity eight ended their season with a fourth-place result in the petite final. The Badgers, who raced to a 6:44.9 finished three and a half seconds behind first-place Clemson in a close race. The Tigers won the petite final in 6:41.4, with Iowa second in 6:42.8 and Minnesota third in 6:43.6. Ohio State won the varsity eight race, beating out second-place Michigan, third-place Michigan State and fourth-place Notre Dame.
"It was a good day," said head coach Mary Browning. " We didn't do what we really wanted to do in the varsity eight, but I think they really raced their best race possible. They squeezed out all the speed they could."
In the second varsity eight, the Badgers finished the season in style with a third-place finish in the grand final. Michigan again won the race, in 6:51.5, but the UW was under five seconds back in 6:56.2. Michigan State finished between the Badgers and Wolverines in second, clocking 6:53.8. After Wisconsin, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Iowa rounded out the grand final.
"The second varsity did an excellent job," commented Browning. "I'm so proud of them. It was an incredible race."
The racing for Wisconsin today completes its 2001-02 season.
Browning concluded, "I'm happy to leave Wisconsin on such a positive note and very grateful to have been able to finish my career with such wonderful student-athletes."
