Badger Rowers in World Championship Finals

Senior Beau Hoopman and alumni Matt Smith, Eric Mueller, Ryan Torgerson and Katie Hammes are competing on the U.S. National team this week in the 2002 FISA World Rowing Championships, in Seville, Spain.
Hoopman is rowing with the men's four without coxswain. On Sunday, his boat finished third with a time of 6:09.36. The Slovakian team won the heat with a time of 5:53.06. The U.S. advanced to the repechage on Tuesday, where they placed third with a time of 6:00.31. First-place Netherlands' time of 5:56.59 edged the American boat. They did earn a spot in Thursday's semifinal. In the semifinal, the boat finished 6:26.37 making Friday's B Final. Germany won the semifinal with a time of 6:12.60.
Both Mueller and Torgeson are rowing the men's eight. Their boat captured first in their heat on Monday with a time of 5:26.74. The first-place finish put them in this weekend's finals.
Hammes is competing with the women's four without coxswain. On Sunday, her boat finished third with a time of 6:54.28, behind the first-place Canadian team that finished with a 6:49.64. The U.S. advanced to Tuesday's repechage, where they finished first with a time of 6:39.35. The victory advanced them to the finals this weekend.
Smith has yet to race with the men's lightweight eight, but will race this weekend.
