Badgers Compete in World Rowing Championships

This past week, senior Beau Hoopman and alumni Matt Smith, Eric Mueller, Ryan Torgerson and Katie Hammes participated in the 2002 FISA World Rowing Championships, Sept. 15-22 in Seville, Spain on the U.S. National team.
Hoopman's boat placed sixth in the `B' final men 's four without coxswain race on Saturday with a time of 6:16.66. New Zealand won this heat with a 5:54.13.
On Sunday, the U.S. men's eight boat that Mueller and Torgerson raced with won the bronze with a time of 5:29.27. Canada barely beat them out with a 5:26.92.
Hammes raced in the women's four without coxswain final on Sunday. Her boat captured fifth with a 6:35.29. They trailed behind first-place Australia by a little over nine seconds.
Smith competed with the men's lightweight eight boat that finished third in Saturday's final. Their time of 5:38.21 placed them just behind first-place Italy, who finished in 5:35.05.
Hoopman will be returning to the UW to practice with the men 's rowing team in preparation for their first regatta, the Head of the Charles. This will take place in Cambridge, Mass. on October 19.
