Carla MacLeod, the Wisconsin women's hockey team captain, has been named to Canada's 2003 National Women's Team roster for the Four Nations Cup, held in Sweden, Nov. 5-9.
The roster announcement by Canada's national women 's head coach Karen Hughes follows the five-day Team Canada Thanksgiving Festival held last week in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. It represents the first step towards being chosen for Canada's 2004 International Ice Hockey Federation World Women's Championship Team.
"The Thanksgiving Festival in Dartmouth this past week was a terrific start to our season," said Hughes. "It continues to be clear to us that we have great depth in the program and a number of players challenging for positions again this season. The 2003 Four Nations Cup will be a very competitive event and we're looking forward to the challenge and an excellent opportunity to evaluate our players at this level."
Canada's Four Nations Cup roster is a development and evaluation roster. During the 2003-04 season and over the course of the next two seasons, Canada will name different rosters for camps and events.
Over the course of the 2003'04 season, head scout Wally Kozak and the National Women's Team coaching staff (Hughes, assistant coaches Ken Dufton and Doug Lidster) will evaluate and monitor players that attended the Thanksgiving Festival as well as other players prior to naming a final World Championship roster in February 2004. The 2004 IIHF World Women's Championship will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, March 30-April 6.
The 2003 Four Nations Cup marks Canada's first and only international competition during the 2003'04 season prior to the 2004 IIHF World Women's Hockey Championship. Players and staff will be departing for Sweden on November 2.
Canada will play national women's teams from Finland, Sweden and the United States at the 2003 Four Nations Cup. Since the Nations Cup (previously the Three Nations Cup) started in 1996, Canada has won seven of eight events, including the 2002 Four Nations Cup in Kitchener, Ontario.
Canada's Four Nations Cup roster includes 13 Canadian Olympic gold medalists as well as 15 players from Canada's National Under-22 Program. MacLeod will be one of just three players making their international debut with Canada's national women's team in Sweden.
MacLeod also played for the 2003 Canadian Under-22 National Team that played in the European Air Canada Cup women's international competition held Feb. 5-8 in Salzgitter and Hannover, Germany.
Additionally, MacLeod was selected to the 2003 Canadian Under-22 National Team for a three-game series against the U.S. Under-22 National Team in August. The U-22 team captain, MacLeod scored the tying goal in the first game of the series that the U.S. eventually won 2-0-1.
Selected as Wisconsin's 2003'04 team captain by a vote of her teammates, MacLeod has posted four goals and 28 assists for 32 points in her career, while building a +24 during two years as a Badger. A native of Calgary, Alberta, she was selected to the 2002 WCHA All-Tournament team and is a legal studies major.
