BADGERS OPEN WCHA SEASON AGAINST No. 1 MINNESOTA
The Wisconsin women's hockey team, now 4-0-0 overall and 0-0-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, plays host to No. 1 Minnesota this weekend at the Kohl Center to start UW's 2003'04 WCHA season.
The Badgers will take to their home ice against the Golden Gophers this Saturday, Oct. 25, and Sunday, Oct. 26 at 2:05 p.m.
THIS WEEKEND'S SERIES: SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GOPHERS
Ranked first in the nation by the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division I poll, Minnesota opened up its season with a two-game series sweep against Ohio State in Minneapolis this past weekend.
The Gophers defeated the Buckeyes 6-3 and 7-0 to improve to 2-0-0 overall and in the WCHA. Sophomore forward Krissy Wendell tallied five goals and one assist against OSU, while teammate La Toya Clarke chipped in three goals.
WHERE'S CARL SPACKLER'
Like the groundskeeper in 'Caddyshack', the Badgers have a tough history with the Golden Gophers. In fact, Wisconsin owns a 3-19-1 overall record against Minnesota in four years of border battles between these two Big Ten and WCHA opponents.
Additionally, UW's 19 games against its western neighbor is the longest of any all-time series in Wisconsin women's hockey history.
The Badgers played the Gophers five times last season, including once in the 2003 WCHA Final Five semifinals. With a 1-4 record against UM in 2002'03, Wisconsin earned a lone 2-1 victory Feb. 28 on the home ice of the Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, Wis. Sis Paulsen scored the game-winning goal against Minnesota with assists from Grace Hutchins and Sharon Cole.
WISCONSIN SWEEPS MAINE
Wisconsin earned a 2-0 series sweep on the road at Maine this past weekend to improve to 4-0-0 overall.
The Badgers edged out the Black Bears 5-4 Sunday, followed by a 6-1 dominating win Monday to complete the two-game sweep.
Jackie Friesen led her teammates with three goals scored in two games, while frosh forward Sara Bauer tallied five assists for Wisconsin.
Frosh goaltender Christine Dufour and sophomore Meghan Horras each played one game in net, collecting eight and 18 saves respectively. Dufour's start and subsequent win was her collegiate first.
BAUER'S THE TOP BADGER
Wisconsin frosh Sara Bauer, a St. Catharines, Ontario native, has earned six assists in the Badgers' four games this season.
Her six points currently leads the entire Wisconsin team in scoring, while sophomore Nikki Burish (3-2=5) and junior Molly Engstrom (1-4=5) are tied for a close second with five points a piece.
WISCONSIN REMAINS IN TOP-10 RANKINGS NATIONALLY
Wisconsin dropped one spot to seventh place nationally in the U.S. College Hockey Online Division I poll (Oct. 20), while holding on to a sixth-place ranking in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll for Oct. 14.
The Badgers received a No. 3 nod from the WCHA coaches in a preseason poll released Oct. 2. Minnesota claimed the top spot, while Minnesota-Duluth finished second ahead of Wisconsin.
NATIONAL TEAM BADGERS
Five members of the 2003'04 Wisconsin women's hockey roster played for the U.S. and Canadian Under-22 National Teams this past July in a three-game exhibition series that the Americans won 2-0-1.
Junior Molly Engstrom skated for Team U.S.A., while juniors Jackie Friesen and Carla MacLeod joined frosh Meaghan Mikkelson and Bobbi-Jo Slusar on Team Canada.
UW's team captain this season, MacLeod also captained her U-22 teammates and was recently named to Canada's Four Nations Cup team, the first step in being selected to her country's national senior women's team.
