Badger Men Sit In Second Place at Minnesota Invite

The Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team trails only host Minnesota after the opening day of competition at the 12-team Minnesota Invitational on Friday. The Golden Gophers accumulated 419.50 team points, while the Badgers tallied 274.50.
Junior Adam Mania continued his strong season, placing first in the 200-yard individual medley while swimming a leg on both of the winning relay squads. Mania opened the meet by joining Matt Marshall, Eric Wiesner and Dale Rogers in edging the Minnesota quartet by eight-hundreths of a second in capturing the 200-yard freestyle relay title in a meet-record time of 1:20.91.
Mania then set another meet record on his own, taking the 200 IM title with a mark of 1:49.41. The record-breaking didn't stop there, though, as Mania, Marshall, Rogers and Kevin Zakrzewski combined in shattering the 400-yard medley relay standard with a time of 3:15.61.
Marshall contributed a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (20.82), while Rogers came in a close fourth (20.86).
The team of Tim Liebhold, Michael Hruska, Pat Torpey and Wiesner added a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:23.02), while Liebhold went on to take third in the 200 IM (1:51.44).
Wiesner, Torpey and Michael Hamm all reached the championship final of the 500-yard free, placing fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively. The team of Zakrzewski, Scott Speer, Chris Scheuber and Chris Anderson chipped in with a fourth-place finish in the 200 free relay.
Action continues Saturday and Sunday at the University of Minnesota with prelims beginning at noon and the finals slated to begin at 6 p.m.
