Men's Hockey Hires LeRose for Assistant Coaching Position

Head men's hockey coach Mike Eaves announced today that Mark LeRose will join his staff as an assistant coach to replace the recently-departed John Hynes. The appointment will last until April 30, 2004.
LeRose comes to Madison from Aspen, Colo., where he was the coaching director for Aspen junior hockey from 1996'99 and 2001'03. There he was responsible for the development of over 250 players, 12 teams and 30 coaches.
While in Aspen, LeRose also coached the Aspen High School skiers. During his tenure from 2001'03, he led his team to a 30-7 record.
Prior to his time in Aspen, LeRose spent 1999'00 as a coaching staff assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins. There he was responsible for video breakdown, statistical and performance reports, game day offensive and defensive charting, on-ice skill development of players, as well as system and player personnel decisions.
In the summer of 2000 LeRose was a coach at USA Hockey's Select-15 Olympic Festival in St. Cloud, Minn., directing his team to the bronze medal with a 4-1 record.
From 1993'99, the former Canisius College player coached various youth teams in Aspen. He directed the Aspen Avalanche to the 1996'97 and 1997'98 midget AA state titles and led the Aspen U-14 team to the state tournament in 1995'96. He also helped the Aspen U-10 team to a state runner-up result in 1993 '94.
During 1998'99, LeRose trained USA Hockey-registered coaches in the State of Colorado as the Colorado Coach-in-Chief. He also founded Rocky Mountain Hockey Schools in Aspen, Colo., spending 1996'99 with the organization and is the school's former president. Finally, he served as head instructor at Island Sports Center from 1999'02 in Pittsburgh.
LeRose served as captain of the Division I program at Canisius College during his playing days, which lasted from 1988'92. He graduated in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in marketing.
LeRose replaces former Badger assistant coach John Hynes, who recently left the UW program to take a head coaching position with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich.
