Wisconsin Men Edge Indiana, 117-114
November 07, 2003 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The 10th-ranked Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team narrowly escaped with a 117-114 victory against the Indiana Hoosiers at the UW Natatorium in Madison on Friday night. Thanks to solid performances by both relay teams as well as in the backstroke events, the Badgers earned their second Big Ten conference victory of the season. Junior Adam Mania dominated the action, participating in three of the team's four pool-best performances.
Mania opened the record-breaking with his split in the 400-yard medley relay. Mania's backstroke time smashed his previous mark of 48.96 set earlier this season. Mania broke James Sharp's (Michigan) previous pool-best (1:47.88) with a 1:47.39 effort in the 200 backstroke. He also added a victory in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.40).
Mania teamed with Matt Marshall, Dale Rogers and Kevin Zakrewski to set a new pool record in the 400-yard medley relay. Marshall, Rogers, Chris Anderson and Eric Wiesner combined on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. The relay teams each broke their own records, set at the Wisconsin Invitational and against Iowa at the Natatorium. Rogers also earned a victory in the 100-yard freestyle race (44.97) while Marshall won the 50-yard freestyle (20.85).
Wisconsin got key first-place finishes from Tim Liebhold in the 400-yard individual medley (3:57.41) and Wiesner in the 500-yard freestyle (4:33.45).
There are more opportunities for record breaking coming next week. The Badgers host the Northwestern Wildcats on Thursday, Nov.13th. The meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
