Rowers Take Part in Annual Reindeer Run
December 11, 2003 | Women's Rowing
While most people were sleeping Thursday morning, the women's rowing teams were braving single-digit temperatures and taking part in their annual "Reindeer Run" to the Madison State Capitol.
The women's rowing team has organized a "Reindeer Run" every December for at least eight years. Beginning at 7 a.m., approximately 60 novice women's rowers, traditionally dressed as reindeer, and 45 varsity women's rowers, wearing seasonal red and white hats, took part in the run.
The costumes can be quite creative - the novices buy "antlers", with some imaginative indviduals taping small branches to their heads or adorning themselves with antlers made from plastic spoons. In recent years, there has also been an athlete dressed as a dreidel.
Once the group made it inside the rotunda, the rowers encircled the decorated tree to sing carols and, of course, "Varsity." The group then ran back to the their starting point, the Dave McClain Athletic Facility adjacent to Camp Randall Stadium.
It looked the annual tradition was in jeopardy due to security concerns, but through the help of Julie Aulik and Lisa Maroney (from UW Hospital) and Senator Fred Risser, the team was able to continue its December tradition.
