Men's Hockey Climbs to No. 4
December 15, 2003 | Men's Hockey
Two weeks after earning its first national ranking in over two seasons, the Wisconsin men's hockey team rose to No. 4, entering the top five for the first time since Oct. 30, 2000.
The Badgers (11-3-4, 6-2-4 WCHA), on a school record-tying, 14-game unbeaten streak, jumped from No. 7 to No. 4 with a home sweep over Minnesota State last weekend. Wisconsin won the first game of the series, 4-1, following a day-long delay due to a power outage in part of Madison. The game was resumed prior to Saturday's contest and the last 5:10 of the contest played out. The Badgers then went on to sweep the series with a 3-2 victory in game two.
Wisconsin's 16 WCHA points places the Badgers in second place, two points behind league-leader St. Cloud State. The Badgers boast two games at-hand on the Huskies. No. 1 North Dakota's 14 points puts it in a share of third place with Minnesota-Duluth. UND has played four less games than Wisconsin.
No. 4 Wisconsin takes the week off before playing host to the 15th-annual Badger Hockey Showdown on Dec. 27 and 28 at the Kohl Center. Ferris State meets UMass-Lowell at 4:35 p.m. on Saturday, followed by Wisconsin and Union at 7:35 p.m.
Win or lose, the Badgers play again on Sunday at 7:35 p.m., while Union plays at 4:35 p.m. The championship game will be played between the two winning teams from the first round at either 4:35 p.m. or 7:35 p.m.
