July 08, 2003 | Women's Rowing
Former Wisconsin women's openweight rower Katie Hammes (La Crosse, Wis.) was among the first three crews named to USRowing's 2003 World Championships Team last week.
Wisconsin's first First Team All-Big Ten rower as a senior in 2000, Hammes will race in the women's pair at the 2003 FISA World Championships held in Milan, Italy, August 24-31. Also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection while with the Badgers, Hammes was named a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete during both her junior and senior seasons.
Hammes made the team when her boat finished fifth at rowing 's most recent world cup stop in Munich, Germany. According to USRowing's selection procedures, the winners of the National Selection Regatta in the small boats, including the women's pair, can qualify as the U.S. entry for the 2003 World Championships with a top-six finish at the Munich World Cup race without further selection trials. Hammes and her teammate Lianne Nelson had until last Monday night, one week after the completion of the world cup event, to declare their intention to compete at the world championships.
The men's double sculls and lightweight women's double sculls were also selected in a similar manner. Five boat classes ' the women's single sculls, men's single sculls, men's double sculls, women's double sculls, and men's pair ' will be held July 10-15 in Princeton, N.J. Ten other boat classes will be selected following trials July 22-27 in Camden, N.J., while the final six boats 'the men's and women's eight, men's and women's quadruple sculls, men's four and lightweight men's four ' will by chosen by the national team coaches by August 4.
Hammes makes her second appearance on a U.S. national team. Wisconsin 's 20th women's rower on the U.S. national team finished fifth at the 2002 World Championships held in Seville, Spain last September as part of the four without coxswain.
