Borges Added to Women's Openweight Staff

Head coach Maren LaLiberty has announced the hiring of Nicole Borges as openweight varsity assistant rowing coach. Borges began her duties on Sept. 10.
Borges joins Wisconsin women's rowing as an assistant varsity coach after spending the last five years coaching at Vashon Island Rowing Club in Vashon Island, Wash., the University of Washington and at the Toronto Boulevard Yacht Club.
Borges was the head coach at Vashon Island Rowing Club for 2002 '03, while assisting Washington's novice women. She also coached masters women at Vashon Island during 2001'02 while interning in the Washington athletic media relations office. While a student, Borges spent the summers of 1998 and 1999 as a rowing instructor at the Toronto Boulevard Yacht Club.
A four-year varsity letter winner, she received All-Pac 10 honors in 2001. Borges' prestigious rowing career also includes NCAA championships in 1998 in the varsity four with coxswain and in 2001 with the varsity eight, four PAC-10 championships, and winning the Inaugural Henley Prize for being a Royal British Henley Champion in 2000. In addition to her collegiate career, she was a member of the Canadian National Rowing Team and competed in the World Championships in Switzerland in August of 2001. Most recently Borges earned both a gold and silver medal at the World University Games in Nottingham, England in August of 2002.
'Nicole Borges, our new openweight varsity assistant coach, will be a great addition to our staff,' LaLiberty said. 'Her experiences on the Canadian National Team and on the University of Washington Rowing Team, where she won two NCAA Championships, will enable her to provide valuable knowledge and insight to our aspiring DI athletes.'
Borges earned a bachelor of arts degree in English with a minor in communication from Washington in 2002.
