New Crew House Construction Project has Begun
September 18, 2003 | Women's Rowing
The much-anticipated construction project to build the new UW Crew House officially began on Monday, Sept. 2, though the Wisconsin rowing teams started months earlier to prepare for the year that lies ahead.
The women's openweight and lightweight teams, as well as the men's team, have settled into their new home for the year at Willows Beach, about a half-mile west of the construction site at the north end of Babcock Drive. Coaches, UW staff and student-athletes all helped make the transition to the new site.
The boat docks were moved from the old Crew House site to Willows Beach in August, weeks before construction began. Temporary fencing and tents have been raised at the new site at 2080 Willow Drive for boat storage and meeting areas. The teams will also use a storage shed located near the Goodman Diamond, Wisconsin's softball field, to house additional boats and ergometer machines.
One of the first steps in constructing the new UW Crew House is the demolition of the existing Crew House, which was built in 1967. That process is expected to last two-and-a-half weeks. Salvaging of all the useful materials in the structure was completed by Sept. 12, while demolition of the building began on Monday, Sept. 15. Fencing has been erected surrounding the construction site for safety and security. Majestic trees in the vicinity have also been protected to insure the natural character of the Lake Mendota lake shore.
The entire project is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2004.
