In his first season as the full-time starting quarterback senior Jim Sorgi has helped the Badgers to a 3-1 record in the first four weeks of the 2003 season. In last week 's 38-27 win over North Carolina Sorgi passed former Badger Darrell Bevell to become UW's all-time leader in pass efficiency. The senior from Fraser, Mich. has a career pass efficiency rating of 134.8. Sorgi, who picked up his first win as a starter in the season opening 24-17 victory over West Virginia, also ranks fifth on UW's all-time completion list with a .547 completion percentage.
Sorgi, who is one of four captains on the 2003 Badgers squad, is the only quarterback to throw for 200 yards in three consecutive games during head coach Barry Alvarez 's 14-year tenure at Wisconsin. Sorgi threw for a career-high 281 yards in the Badgers 48-31 win over Akron Sept. 6. In that game, Sorgi connected with wide receiver Lee Evans for a historic 99-yard touchdown pass. The play set a school record and tied an NCAA record for the longest play from scrimmage.
Coming into the 2003 season Sorgi was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list. So far this season, Sorgi and the Badger offense rank third in the Big Ten averaging 430.5 yards per game. Wisconsin opens the Big Ten Saturday, Sept. 27 (5 p.m. CDT, ESPN2) when they travel to Illinois (1-3). The Badgers have lost their last two contests with the Fighting Illini, including a 37-20 defeat last year at Camp Randall.
