Wisconsin Suffers First Season Loss to Ohio State, Splits Weekend
October 23, 2004 | Women's Hockey
The No. 4 Wisconsin women's hockey team suffered its first loss of the season to Western Collegiate Hockey Association rival, Ohio State, 3-1, Saturday night in Columbus, Ohio. The loss takes the Badgers to 5-1-0 on the season and 3-1-0 in the WCHA. The Buckeyes even their records to 3-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in WCHA play.
Starting things off for the Badgers, sophomore Sara Bauer burned OSU 's goalie, Erika Vanderveer at 8:41 in the first period. Bauer leads the Badgers in goals with seven. The first period ended with few other scoring opportunities for either team.
Both teams came back from the first intermission with more speed and tenacity. Ohio State was able to capitalize on a power-play at 7:49 as senior Jeni Creary flipped one in the goal it was the first Christine Dufour has allowed this season. With the game tied Wisconsin attempted to get an edge pulling Dufour with two seconds left in the second period, but the buzzer sounded and sent the teams to the locker room.
OSU broke the deadlock when Wisconsin was short-handed, with a goal at 10:23 in the third. Despite Wisconsin's 14 shots in the period, a stingy Buckeye defense denied every attempt. Nearing the end of the game, Creary broke away from the action in the final minute and scored on Wisconsin's empty net, sealing an OSU victory.
The Badgers return to Madison for Halloween weekend and WCHA series vs. St. Cloud State. The puck drops at 2:05 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29 and Saturday, Oct. 30. Stay tuned to uwbadgers.com for the latest in Wisconsin women's hockey.
