Wisconsin Shuts Out St. Cloud State, 7-0
October 29, 2004 | Women's Hockey
The No. 5 Wisconsin women's hockey team was on their game Friday afternoon in a commanding 7-0 shutout over Western Collegiate Hockey Association opponent, St. Cloud State. The win set Wisconsin at 6-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in conference play to start the series. The Huskies dropped to 2-5-0 overall and in the WCHA.
'I was really happy with the effort,' said head coach Mark Johnson. 'I thought we had a real good week of practice, the intensity was high and the pace was good. They showed in the game, that when they work hard like that good things usually happen.'
Sophomore scoring machine Sara Bauer, was up to her old tricks scoring her second hat trick in just seven games. In addition to her goals she helped the day's second leading goal-scorer, Lindsay Macy to her two goals. With five points Friday, Bauer is tied with Macy as the team's points leader with 16.
'(Bauer) is playing well and she's capitalizing on a lot of her opportunities,' said Johnson. 'I'm glad she 's off to a good start. She had such a good season last year. To come back and perform the way she has is really a credit to her. It's usually tougher the second time around, people are going to key on her and obviously as you go through the season people start focusing more attention on her.'
The overall Badger attack was fierce with 50 shots on goal. On the power-play, Wisconsin made good on two of five opportunities. Alternately, on the penalty-kill, Wisconsin was short-handed for six minutes and allowed only two shots.
In addition to stellar blueliners, the Badgers had junior Meghan Horras in net with 16 saves for the day. The shutout was her second of the season and she now owns a 0.75 goals against average.
'Meghan (Horras) was good to have in the net today, ' said Johnson. 'It's tough when you sit there for six, seven, eight minutes and don't get much action and then all of a sudden you a two-on-one pops out. She made some real nice saves. When she was tested she handled herself very well. '
The action continues in game two of the series as St. Cloud State returns for the rematch at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday. Stay tuned to uwbadgers.com for the latest.
