Wisconsin Claims Game One, 5-1
November 20, 2004 | Women's Hockey
The No. 5/4 Wisconsin women's hockey team welcomed the North Dakota Fighting Sioux to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association as they defeated them, 5-1 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena Saturday afternoon. In first ever meeting for the teams Wisconsin raised its record to 8-3-0 overall and 6-3-0 in the WCHA. The Sioux are now 3-9-1 overall, 3-8-0 in the conference.
Both teams started cautiously in the first minutes, but Wisconsin soon found their footing and went on a three-goal scoring streak. Lighting the lamp on Wisconsin's first goal was junior Cyndy Kenyon at 8:58 with her fourth goal as a Badger. Meaghan Mikkelson added the helper. Next up was senior assistant captain Jackie Friesen on the power-play from Nikki Burish and Grace Hutchins at 10:58. Uliasz tallied her third goal of the season with a blistering slapshot from the just inside the blueline. Newcomer Jinelle Zaugg gathered the assist.
Forced to endure a minute with just three skaters on the ice to start the second period, the Badgers remained on the penalty-kill for four more minutes. The whistle had blown on Burish for a five-minute major cross check at 2:43. The Badgers remained fierce as they not only killed that penalty, but Sharon Cole inked her fourth goal of the season and her first short-handed goal at 6:32. Wisconsin denied any UND scoring attempts on the power-play going 0-5 in the game.
A scuffle on Wisconsin's crease sent two Sioux to the box though both penalties were assessed to Melissa Dianoski, two minutes for slashing the goalie and 10-minute misconduct penalty. UW's Carla MacLeod also spent two minutes in the box for roughing.
After over 27 minutes scoreless, North Dakota got on the board with a goal from Marissa Hangsleben. Each team battled for opportunities as the clock wound down in the second period.
Sara Bauer slipped the puck past UND goalie, Margaret-Ann Hinkley at 13:09 in the third. Wisconsin's fifth goal in the contest fulfilled the statistical prophecy that while the Badgers have averaged 5.2 goals this season, the Sioux have been allowing 5.1. A parallel that held true in Saturday's Badger victory.
In her fifth game in the net for the Badgers, Christine Dufour stopped 20 shots and allowed just one goal. For UND, Hinkley allowed five goals and stopped 19 other attempts.
The rematch will begin at 2:05 p.m. Sunday at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
