Wisconsin Topples No. 1 Michigan
November 27, 2004 | Men's Hockey
The second-ranked Wisconsin men's hockey team scored two goals on special teams in the second period to surge past No. 1 Michigan 3-1 Saturday night in front of 13,966 fans at the Kohl Center.
Captain Adam Burish (Madison, Wis.) scored a power play goal and Andrew Joudrey (Bedford, Nova Scotia) added a shorthanded conversion in the second to secure UW's tenth victory of the season (10-4-0 overall, 7-3-0 WCHA).
Defensively, Bernd Bruckler made 23 saves and the Badgers held the Wolverines (9-4-1, 7-1-0 CCHA) to 0-for-5 on the power play. Wisconsin finished the game 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
The Badgers struck first in the opening period as Jake Dowell (Eau Claire, Wis.) scored his seventh goal of the season at the 12:56 mark. Nick Licari (Duluth, Minn.) was pulled down to the right of the Michigan crease yet managed to deliver a pass through traffic to Dowell who squirted a shot past Michigan goaltender Al Montoya.
Michigan responded at 18:41 of the first as Chad Kolarik scored his fifth goal of the season. Jeff Tambellini and Eric Werner were credited with assists on the goal which sent the game to the first intermission tied at one.
UW went back into the lead at 11:10 of the second as Burish scored on Wisconsin's fifth power play of the game. Jeff Likens (Barrington, Ill.) skated the puck up the right side of the UM zone and found Burish in the slot who beat Montoya for what proved to be the game-winner. Freshman Joe Pavelski (Plover, Wis.) also added an assist to tie him with Robbie Earl (Los Angeles) for the team lead with 11 assists.
Wisconsin extended the lead to 3-1 at 17:20 of the second as Joudrey sniped a shot past Montoya from the high slot. Ryan MacMurchy (Regina, Saskatchewan) and Davis Drewiske (Hudson, Wis.) added assist on the shorthanded goal.
The UW win paired with last year's 3-1 triumph in Ann Arbor marks the first time that the Badgers have won two straight games against the Wolverines since victories in 1987 and 1992.
Wisconsin resumes WCHA play on Dec. 3-4 when Minnesota Duluth visits the Kohl Center. Face off both nights is set for 7:07 p.m.
