Badgers to Take on Michigan
November 04, 2004 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team (3-1-0) will face its second Big Ten opponent this season, ninth-ranked Michigan (1-0), at 5 p.m. Friday at the UW Natatorium.
"Michigan has traditionally been a very tough school,' assistant head coach Geoff Hanson said. 'Our coaching staff has never faced Michigan in a dual meet since working here, and we look forward to competing with them. '
The Badgers had first-place finishes last week from Adam Mania (Hickman, Neb.), Nick Bennett (Birmingham, Ala.) and Tim Liebhold (Chapel Hill, N.C.).
Last week the Badgers lost to Arizona 160-99 while the Wolverines opened their season with a win over Easter Michigan, 158-85. The Wolverines won 11 of the 13 events with eight different athletes winning an event.
Michigan has a new head coach this year, Bob Bowman, after its own alum, 22-year coach Jon Urbanchek, retired this past spring. Bowman was the personal coach of Michael Phelps, eight time Olympic medalists in the 2004 Summer Games, and continues to train with Phelps in order to prepare the nineteen year old phenom for more Worldwide competition.
The Badgers haven't faced the Wolverines in a dual meet for 10 years, before any of the current coaching staff was here at Wisconsin. The last dual meet with Michigan was won by the Wolverines, 165-77 in Madison.
