Wisconsin's Late Rally Falls Short Vs. Minnesota Duluth
November 06, 2004 | Women's Hockey
In Saturday night's rematch No. 5 Wisconsin women's hockey team 's third period rally was not enough to overcome No. 4 Minnesota Duluth as the Bulldogs skated to a 2-1 victory. The Badgers are now 7-3-0 overall and 5-3-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Bulldogs started the scoring again, less than two minutes into the game. Despite several chances the Badgers were not able to get on the board. Stuck in another five-on-three situation, the Badgers successfully killed that penalty and denied the Bulldogs any more points heading into the first intermission.
Sophomore Heidi Kletzien took a hard hit into the boards at 3:31, to start the second stanza, sending Jill Sales to the penalty box for five minutes. Scoreless in the second, after two more UMD penalties and three whistles on UW, the teams cleared the ice for the second break.
Starting the third period with a minute left on her penalty, senior captain Carla MacLeod had to watch the Bulldogs score their second goal of game just 35 seconds into the final stanza. The remaining period was ridden with penalties, five power play opportunities for UMD and two for Wisconsin. Still, with one Badger in the box junior Cyndy Kenyon finished a deflected shot from MacLeod for a short-handed goal at 17:14.
Wisconsin used its timeout with 46 second left on the clock and brought Horras to the bench. A furious 23 seconds ensued and a rattled UMD used its timeout. Despite a number of good chances the Badgers could not extend the game.
For the first time this season head coach Mark Johnson entrusted the Badger net to the same goalie two nights in a row. Meghan Horras allowed two goals and nabbed 17 saves on the night. She is 4-2-0 in the net this season.
Wisconsin will take a break this week and not be on the ice until Nov. 20-21 at North Dakota for the teams' first ever meetings. North Dakota is currently 3-6-0 overall and in the WCHA.
Two Badgers will be competing, but against each other. Seniors Molly Engstrom and Carla MacLeod will be representing their countries, USA and Canada, respectively in the 2004 Four Nations Cup, Nov. 10-14 in Lake Placid, N.Y. MacLeod and Engstrom will faceoff Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. and potentially again in either the bronze- or gold-medal contests.
