UW sophomore Jake Dowell recorded two assists to help the United States earn a 6-4 win over Switzerland in its second game of the 2005 World Junior Championship on Monday. The U.S. now holds a 2-0-0 record in tournament play and will face Belarus on Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 7:38 p.m. CST (ESPN2).
In a third period that saw eight goals scored in a span of seven minutes, the U.S. would score three unanswered and four overall in the session. First, with the U.S. up 2-0 to start the period, the Swiss team tallied twice in the first 1:04 of the period. The U.S. responded quickly as Drew Stafford kicked off a U.S. frenzy with a shot from the high slot at 1:34 of the third. Stafford's goal was followed by goals from T.J. Hensick at 2:35 and Robbie Schremp, who tallied the eventual game-winner after walking the puck out from behind the net and firing short-side to beat Swiss goaltender Michael Tobler at 4:07.
Switzerland mounted a short comeback, tallying twice to bring the score to 5-4, but Patrick O'Sullivan wrapped up the win with a shot through the five-hole with less than 13 minutes to play.
Callahan first put the United States on the board at 9:36 of the opening period, and Kevin Porter added a second score near the midway point of the second.
In other tournament action on Monday, Canada defeated Sweden 8-1. In games at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls, Finland fell to Slovakia, 2-0, and Russia topped the Czech Republic, 4-1.
