The No. 4 Wisconsin men's hockey team recorded goals in all three periods to upend 14th-ranked Minnesota Duluth 3-2 Friday night in front of 11,521 fans at the Kohl Center.
Robbie Earl (Los Angeles), Jake Dowell (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Adam Burish (Madison, Wis.) scored to give the Badgers (11-4-0 overall, 8-3-0 WCHA) their fifth consecutive win in league play.
Both teams fired 25 shots on goal, but UW goalie Bernd Bruckler (Graz, Austria) made one more save than UMD goalie Josh Johnson to notch his eighth victory of the season.
Earl gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead at 14:55 of the opening period with his eighth goal of the year. Andrew Joudrey (Bedford, Nova Scotia) skated behind the UMD net and found Earl who beat Johnson with a quick shot from the bottom of the right circle. Freshman Joe Piskula (Antigo, Wis.) added his fourth assist of the season on the play.
The Bulldogs (7-6-2, 5-4-0) tied the game at one when Tim Stapleton beat the buzzer to tally a power play goal at the end of the first period. Evan Schwabe sent a pass to Stapleton who beat Bruckler with a low slap shot from the point.
Wisconsin reclaimed the lead 3:06 into the second as Dowell scored his eighth goal of the season to match Earl's team-leading total. Dowell sent a puck to the front of the net which deflected off of a Bulldog player's skate and into the net. Ross Carlson (Duluth, Minn.) recorded his sixth assist of the year on the only goal of the second period.
Burish extended the UW lead to 3-1 at the 7:12 mark of the third. Joe Pavelski (Plover, Wis.) passed the puck to Kyle Klubertanz (Sun Prairie, Wis.) in the neutral zone who in turn sent a pass back across to Burish on the right. The junior captain skated in and beat Johnson to record his second consecutive game-winning goal.
Minnesota Duluth closed the score to 3-2 just under two minutes later as Nick Anderson buried a quick shot off of a face off at 9:02 of the third.
Wisconsin finished the game 0-for-3 with the man advantage while Minnesota Duluth went 1-for-5.
The Badgers and Bulldogs conclude their series at 7:07 p.m. Saturday at the Kohl Center.
