Wisconsin Ties Yale, Wins In Shootout
December 31, 2004 | Men's Hockey
No. 4 Wisconsin and Yale skated to a 1-1 tie in front of 11,877 fans in the second game of the 16th annual Badger Hockey Showdown at the Kohl Center Friday. The Badgers advance to the title game, winning a dramatic 3-2 shootout following the overtime period. The game marks the Badgers' first tie of the season and sets their record at 13-5-1. It is also Yale's first tie as its record stands at 1-11-1.
Scoreless in the first two periods, Yale broke the stalemate scoring the first goal of the game at 8:10 in the third period. A pair of penalties following a Yale breakaway set the ice count to four-on-four. Wisconsin's Joe Pavelski beat Yale goaltender Mike Modelski with a slapshot from just outside the right face-off circle for the equalizer at 10:01. Robbie Earl and Kyle Klubertantz were credited with the helpers.
Both teams played with urgency as the clock counted down the final 10 minutes of the contest. Still, a flurry of Badger shots in the final minute could not prevent the overtime period.
Now in overtime, an icing call put the puck in Badger territory where netminder Brian Elliott made a heroic glove save off the faceoff to keep the game alive. Elliott made 20 saves on the night and stopped five of seven in the shootout.
Pavelski and Matt Ford nailed their penalty shots, but so did two Bulldogs forcing the sudden death shootout. On the seventh attempt, Joudrey fired the puck through Yale goalie Matt Modelski's legs and clinched the win for Wisconsin, 3-2, on penalty shots.
For the Bulldogs, Modelski stopped 26 shots and gave up three in the shootout.
Though the game was officially listed as a tie, Wisconsin advanced to the championship and will now face Ferris State at 7:07 p.m. on New Year's Day. Defending-champion Ferris State defeated Clarkson, 4-1, earlier Friday afternoon. Yale will face Clarkson at 4:07 p.m. in the consolation game.
