Alvarez Named AFCA Region 3 Coach of the Year

UW football head coach Barry Alvarez has been named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region 3 Coach of the Year as voted by the AFCA membership.
He is one of five regional winners. Other Division I recipents are Virginia's Al Groh (Region 1), Auburn's Tommy Tuberville (Region 2), Texas-El Paso's Mike Price (Region 4) and Utah's Urban Meyer (Region 5).
Alvarez led the Badgers to a 9-2 regular season record, including a 9-0 start to the season and a national ranking as high as No. 4. Wisconsin finished third in the Big Ten with a 6-2 mark. UW will participate in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1 when it takes on Georgia.
The 2004 Regional Coach of the Year winners will be recognized at the AFCA Coach of the Year Dinner at the 2005 AFCA Convention in Louisville, Ky. The dinner is scheduled for January 11. The National Coach of the Year will also be named at the dinner. All head coaches who were eligible for regional honors are eligible for national honors as well.
Alvarez earned AFCA National Coach of the Year honors in 1993 when he led Wisconsin to a 10-1-1 record, the Big Ten title and a victory in the Rose Bowl.
