Lewis, Sorgi Chosen on Day No. 2
April 25, 2004 | Football
A pair of former Badgers ' linebacker Alex Lewis and quarterback Jim Sorgi ' were selected on the second day of the National Football League Draft Sunday afternoon.
Lewis went to the Detroit Lions in the fifth round (140th overall) and Sorgi was chosen by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round (193rd overall). Wide receiver Lee Evans was a first-round choice (13th overall) of the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.
Lewis was a first-team All-Big Ten performer for the Badgers in 2003. He was third on the team with 89 tackles and led Wisconsin with nine QB sacks. He was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his outing against No. 13 Purdue (6.5 TFLs for 42 yards and 5.0 QB sacks for 39 yards; his TFL total and sack yardage total from that game are school records). Lewis is one of just four players in school history with at least three blocked kicks.
Sorgi, Wisconsin's career pass efficiency leader and just the second Badger QB of the Alvarez era to be drafted, threw for 2,251 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. A team captain in 2003, he threw for the third-highest yardage total (380) in school history and a school record-tying five TDs (all to 2004 NFL first-round draft choice Lee Evans) against 21st-ranked Michigan State. He completed 39-58 passes for 685 yards, nine TDs and one interception during back-to-back games (combined) against Minnesota and Michigan State last season. He also fired an NCAA record-tying 99-yard TD to Evans against Akron in 2003.
