No. 2 Badgers Earn Shutout Sweep Over Vermont
October 16, 2005 | Women's Hockey
The No. 2 Wisconsin women's hockey team shut out the Vermont Catamounts, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center to earn a weekend sweep over the non-conference opponent. The Badgers continued their now-three game unbeaten streak and are 3-1-0 on the season. Still looking for a win, UVM fell to 0-3-1.
Wisconsin came out firing in the first period as Sara Bauer (St. Catharines, Ontario) connected with Jinelle Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.) for a goal just 29 seconds after the drop of the puck. Badger blueliner Bobbi-Jo Slusar (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) notched a goal at 10:06 in the period. Senior Cyndy Kenyon (Sparta, Wis.) followed with a power-play goal at 16:50 after the Catamounts had been whistled for tripping.
In the second, Wisconsin extended its lead with goals from captain Sharon Cole (Bloomington, Minn.) and Tia Hanson (Medicine Hat, Alberta). Cole took a pass from Slusar and pocketed her goal just 39 seconds into the period. Hanson pushed the puck through traffic on the crease at 15:42 to close out the period and the game's scoring.
Vermont registered 16 shots in the game, but despite a couple close calls, Christine Dufour (Rivere-du-Loup, Quebec) kept the Badger net empty earning her first shutout of the season. For the Catamounts, Shivaun Siegl started the game collecting 11 saves in the first period, but allowed three goals. The UVM coaching staff traded Siegl for sophomore goalie Katie Nichols at the first intermission. Nichols collected 26 saves in the final two periods; a little more than a third of what she stopped Saturday when she blocked 63 saves in the 5-0 Badger win.
After two weeks at home, the Badgers will take their show on the road with a trip to Western Collegiate Hockey Association foe, Minnesota State. Facing off at All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn., the Badgers hope to continue their 24-game unbeaten streak against the Mavericks. The lone blemish on their 23-0-1 all-time record vs. MSU came Nov. 30, 2002 when the teams tied 3-3 in Madison, Wis.
Minnesota State is 3-1-0 after a conference sweep of North Dakota, Oct. 14-15 and an upset split while visiting then-No. 5 Mercyhurst, Oct. 7-8.
Game time is set for 7:07 p.m. Friday and 3:07 p.m. Saturday.
