The Last Tie
October 27, 2005 | Football
Something fans won't see this weekend when the University of Wisconsin and Illinois football teams compete is a tie. That's because the NCAA got rid of them when it adopted its current overtime format in 1996. Thus, the two teams' 3-3 tie in their 1995 game was the last tie of each program's history. Following is a look back at that draw:
It was the last game of the season for the Badgers. Despite RB Carl McCullough rushing for 132 yards and QB Darrell Bevell throwing for 184 yards, UW could not put up any points besides John Hall's 29-yard field goal in the third quarter.
The contest turned out to be such a defensive battle that the 3-0 lead looked like it would be enough heading into the final period. However, Illinois ' Bret Scheuplein nailed a 51-yard field goal with 8:13 remaining to knot the score.
The Illini had a chance to win the game when they began their final drive at the UW 39-yard line with 58 seconds left. After Illinois netted just three yards from three plays, Scheuplein was faced with a 54-yard attempt, which ended up being just short.
For the day, both squads combined for 19 punts and only 543 yards of total offense.
