October 28, 2005 | Women's Hockey
The No. 3 Wisconsin women's hockey team sealed the win 3-2 against conference foe North Dakota Friday at the Kohl Center. The Badgers remain unbeaten against the Fighting Sioux who entered the Western Collegiate Hockey Association last season. Wisconsin improved to 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the conference, while UND dropped to 2-3-0 and 0-3-0 in the WCHA.
With Friday's win against UND, Wisconsin clinched their 100th WCHA victory. UW is just seven games into their seventh season in the league, making this an important milestone for the Badger hockey program.
In the first period freshmen linemates Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Angie Keseley (St. Louis Park, Minn.) combined on two goals. To start the scoring Lawler netted her second goal of the season at 14:17. Keseley was credited with the assist and just over four minutes later was credited with her second goal of the season. Lawler and Alycia Matthews (Castlegar, British Columbia) earned assists on the Badgers ' second goal.
The teams returned from the first intermission to a power play goal at 3:10 from UND's Samantha Bowers. Goalies, Meghan Horras (Appleton, Wis.) and Amber Hasbargen collected 10 and 16 saves, respectively, in the period.
North Dakota sophomores Cami and Cara Wooster combined for the equalizer at 6:14 in the third. Matthews slotted the power play goal at 14:51 in the period to avoid overtime. The Fighting Sioux called a timeout with 30 seconds remaining in the game and opted for an empty net in favor of a sixth skater. Senior Horras guarded the Badger net through four saves in the final moments, even surviving a 6-on-4 UND power play when Matthews was whistled for tripping at 19:57.
In net for UND, Hasbargen made 43 saves while Wisconsin's Horras stopped 21 shots in the game.
The Badgers will look for their 101st conference win and the sweep Saturday when the teams face-off again at the Kohl Center beginning at 2:07 p.m. Live stats will be available at uwbadgers.com.
