Wisconsin Sweeps North Dakota
October 29, 2005 | Women's Hockey
The No. 3 Wisconsin women's hockey team shut out North Dakota 8-0 Saturday at the Kohl Center. The Badgers rose to 6-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while the Fighting Sioux fell to 2-4-0 and 0-4-0 in the WCHA.
Three Badgers, Angie Keseley (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Jinelle Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.) and Sara Bauer (St. Catharines, Ontario) came close to earning a hat trick after each scoring two goals in the win over UND. Junior defender Bobbi-Jo Slusar (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) gathered four assists in the game.
An early whistle on Wisconsin at 2:27 left the Badgers short-handed. The UW penalty kill overachieved when Bauer scored at 3:23 into the first period. A quick pass from Cole in front of the crease for Bauer to complete what would become the game-winner. Junior Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alberta) was also credited with an assist.
With only 20 seconds remaining in the opening period, newcomer Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) fed the puck to Keseley from behind the net for the Badgers second goal of the game. UW goalie Christine Dufour (Rivere-du_Loup, Quebec) collected the second assist after a deflected shot was gathered by Keseley to start the scoring play.
Two goals scored in the second period brought two more Badgers into the scoring mix. Zaugg and Cyndy Kenyon (Sparta, Wis.) scored goals at 7:00 and 14:42, respectively. Slusar registered her first two assists of the game helping put the Badgers up by four after two. The Badger defense was stingiest in the third allowing just one shot on goal.
To start the third period, Zaugg registered her second goal of the day at 1:01 on the power play. Heidi Kletzien (Manitowoc, Wis.) followed shortly with another power-play goal at 3:46. Slusar earned assists on both goals to finish the day with four assists, a career-high in assists and points in a game. With an assist in Friday 's game her series total, five points, is also a career high.
In an effort to curb the Badger attack, the Sioux pulled goalie Amber Hasbargen in favor of a fresher Margaret-Ann Hinkley. The switch came with just over 16 minutes left to play. The Badgers would not be deterred and scored two goals against Hinkley. Bauer and Keseley each marked their second goals of the game.
The Badgers outshot the Fighting Sioux 53-8 in a game that featured high scoring for the Badgers and high penalty minutes for UND. North Dakota was whistled 11 times and was 0-5 on its power play, while Wisconsin was 2-9 with the advantage and served 12 minutes in the box. Dufour stopped all eight shots in the shutout, while Hasbargen stopped 34 shots and Hinkley turned away 11.
The Badgers return to the Kohl Center next Friday and Saturday to take on St. Cloud State. Wisconsin has a winning record (22-3-0) against SCSU since competition began in 1999. During the 2004-05 season, the Badgers defeated the Huskies in each of their five meetings. The Badgers defeated the Huskies 3-1 in the WCHA tournament quarterfinals en route to the championship game.
