Alvarez, Calhoun Named Semifinalists for National Awards

The Maxwell Football Club today announced that University of Wisconsin football head coach Barry Alvarez is a semifinalist for the George Munger Award for College Coach of the Year, and running back Brian Calhoun is a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award for Collegiate Player of the Year.
Both awards have 12 candidates who were selected by the Maxwell Football Club Advisory Committee.
Alvarez, in his 16th and final season at the helm of the football team, has led the Badgers to an 8-1 record this year and a chance to win the Big Ten championship. He has been named a national coach of the year four times'by the Bobby Dodd Foundation, the American Football Coaches Association and College & Pro Football Newsweekly in 1993 and through the Victor Award in 1999.
Calhoun leads the nation with 21 touchdowns (19 rushing, two receiving) and is fifth nationally in both rushing (135.3 ypg) and all-purpose yards (184.1 pg). He also is a candidate for both the Doak Walker Award (nation's top running back) and the Heisman Trophy.
The next round of voting will take place Nov. 7-25. The three finalists for each award will be present at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 8. A formal presentation of the awards will take place on March 3, 2006.
