Cole Garners National and Conference Honors
November 22, 2005 | Women's Hockey
Senior captain Sharon Cole's five-point performance in Wisconsin's weekend sweep of Minnesota caught the attention of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association as well as U.S. College Hockey Online. Both institutions named Cole the offensive player of the week.
A native of Bloomington, Minn., Cole scored a power-play goal in Friday's 2-0 shutout. She followed with two goals and two assists in the Badgers' 6-2 victory Saturday.
The wins marked the first time Wisconsin had swept the neighbor rival and just the third time in Minnesota history the Gophers had been swept on their home ice. The performance was also enough to boost Wisconsin's standing in the polls coming in at the No. 1 slot in the USCHO.com poll and second in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll. The No. 1 ranking is a first in UW women's hockey history.
Personally, Cole has marked more success each season improving from 11 points freshman year, to 17 sophomore year to 38 points junior and 16 so far this season.
Cole and the Badgers will make a trip the Hanover, N.H., for a Thanksgiving weekend tournament hosted by Dartmouth. The Badgers will face host Dartmouth and No. 4 New Hampshire and have something to prove having never won a game against either team.
