November 08, 2005 | Women's Hockey
The Wisconsin women's hockey team (8-1-0, 6-1-0 WCHA) remains No. 3 in the nation as they travel to Winona, Minn., Wednesday, Nov. 9 for a make-up game against Minnesota State (5-3-1, 4-2-1 WCHA). St. Mary's University will host the competition.
Wisconsin won the first game of the series earlier this season. The second Western Collegiate Hockey Association game was postponed after a water main break near All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn. on Oct. 22.
The Badgers remain unbeaten against the Mavericks with a 24-0-1 all-time record, allowing just one tie ever. The tie match came from a 3-3 finish, battled in Madison, Wis., in 2002.
Wisconsin is now feeding off of an 8-game winning streak, losing only their first game of the season against now No. 2-ranked Minnesota Duluth. UW has out shot its opponents 381-173 and out scored them scoring 39-14. Wisconsin has averaged 4.3 goals per game through nine games which ranks fifth, nationally.
The Badgers are also coming off a weekend sweep against conference opponent St. Cloud State. UW dominated both games, never falling behind the Huskies. Friday Wisconsin topped SCSU 5-2 and Saturday 3-1.
Junior Sara Bauer (St. Catharines, Ontario) leads the team in points with 20 overall after nine games. She has eight goals to her credit and 12 assists. Teammate Bobbi-Jo Slusar (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) has also totaled 12 assists in the current season, adding three goals to make her total points 15.
Wisconsin goalie Meghan Horras (Appleton, Wis.) will reach the 100-save mark just six games into the season, should she play Wednesday. She has accumulated 94 saves and a perfect 5-0 record. Her 14-save performance Nov. 4 pushed her over the 1000 career saves mark. She currently boasts 1010 saves.
Minnesota State split a series with Bemidji State Nov. 4-5, shutting out their opponent 3-0 in the Friday match-up. Saturday MSU fell 2-1. Minnesota State had broken in the national rankings at No. 10 last week, but the split with BSU dropped them out this week.
Freshman Felicia Nelson scored the second goal of the game for the Mavericks on the Friday win, improving her season goal total to five. Sophomore goaltender Brit Kehler improved her personal mark to 5-1-0 on the season Friday by stopping all 25 shots faced. She also moved into a tie for second on the MSU charts with her 11th career win.
Originally scheduled as a bye week for Wisconsin, the Minnesota State match-up will be the only competition UW will see over the weekend, in order for the team to rest up and play Minnesota in two weeks. The Nov. 9 game will be free and open to the public, with the puck set to drop at 7:07 p.m.
