Men's Basketball Signs Three
November 09, 2005 | Men's Basketball
Head men's basketball coach Bo Ryan announced Wednesday that high school seniors Jason Bohannon, J.P. Gavinski and Trevon Hughes have signed national letters of intent to attend the University of Wisconsin and play basketball for the Badgers beginning in the fall of 2006.
Bohannon, a 6-2, 185-pound guard from Marion, Iowa, was a first-team all-state selection as both a sophomore and a junior. Last year he averaged 20.8 points per game and was named Mississippi Valley Conference Player of the Year, leading Linn-Mar High School to the Class 4A State Tournament final. As a sophomore, Bohannon averaged 16.5 points and led Linn-Marr to the state title. In both seasons, he was named to the all-state tournament team as well as first-team all-conference, all-metro (Cedar Rapids) and all-district. He enters this season as the second leading scorer in Linn-Mar history and the leader in career 3-point field goals.
'Hungry, driven and competitive are three words that best describe Jason,' Ryan said. 'We are absolutely thrilled to have Jason and his family become part of our Badger family. Jason took the national scene by storm this past summer and proved what we had known for some time. He has the ability to play either guard position and is continuing to develop into a more complete player all the time. The one thing that probably jumps out the most about Jason is that the teams he has been a part of just plain win. He knows what it takes and how to be successful both on and off the court and makes those around him better. It has been a great pleasure to get to know the Bohannon family over the past couple years. It is no secret why Jason is such a solid and successful individual. Wisconsin fans across the country will no doubt enjoy watching Jason throughout his career as a Badger. I am excited to be able to have the opportunity to work with him in the future.'
Gavinski is a 6-11, 230-pound center from Wisconsin Dells, Wis. He averaged 15 points and nine rebounds during his junior season and was named first-team all-conference as well as honorable mention all-state. Gavinski was a second-team all-conference selection as a sophomore, averaging 11 points and 10 rebounds. He led Wisconsin Dells to conference titles as a sophomore and junior.
'J.P. has wanted to be a Wisconsin Badger from day one with us which will make him a true joy to coach and Badger fans extremely appreciative, ' Ryan said. 'It is always special to coach someone who has really wanted to be a Badger for a long time. We are elated to have J.P. and his family joining us and are looking forward to helping him reach his fullest potential. J.P. brings a potentially dominating presence with his ability to rebound and block shots above the rim. His agility and strength have really improved which isn't always the case with a player of his size and age. Probably his greatest attribute at this time is his ability to shoot the basketball and make good decisions passing the ball from the perimeter. We are really excited to help J.P. reach his goals and I know as J.P. continues to develop Badger fans will really enjoy watching him wear Cardinal and White during his career at Wisconsin. '
Hughes, a 6-2, 185-pound guard, attends St. John's NW Military Academy in Delafield, Wis. He was a second-team all-state selection as a junior, averaging 22 points, eight assists and seven rebounds and leading St. John's to the sectional semifinals and a 22-2 overall record. A native of Queens, N.Y., Hughes was an honorable mention all-state pick as a sophomore, averaging 20.2 points and five assists. He has been the Midwest Classic Conference Player of the Year three consecutive seasons. A quarterback on the football team, Hughes was named conference offensive player of the year this season as well as StudentSports.com national player of the week during this year.
'Watching a young man mature and develop like Trevon has over the past few years is what coaching is all about,' Ryan said. 'We are extremely excited to have a point guard of the potential and personality of Trevon joining our team. Each time he visited our campus, those who met with him came away very impressed with his demeanor and his focus on being successful in life. He has a great court vision and an ability to make the decisions necessary that result in positive outcomes for his team. He's worked extremely hard at becoming a more complete player and it has shown in his production. His perimeter shooting has vastly improved over the past year to the point where he has become a very difficult match-up for his opponents. Combining his physical abilities, his mental toughness and the leadership skills he's acquiring at St. John's, give him a chance to be very successful at Wisconsin. It has been great to get to know him and his family over the last few years and I know Badger fans will really enjoy watching Trevon continue to grow and develop.'
