November 09, 2005 | Women's Hockey
The No. 3 Wisconsin women's hockey team defeated Minnesota State after a wild third period at St. Mary's University in Winona, Minn. The Badgers scored six goals in the final period to beat the Mavericks, 7-1. Sophomore Jinelle Zaugg scored two goals, including the game-winner, while Meaghan Mikkelson registered four assists. The Badgers improved to 9-1-0 (7-1-0 WCHA) after the midweek match-up while the Mavericks fell to 5-4-1 (4-3-1 WCHA).
The Badgers remain unbeaten against the Mavericks with a 25-0-1 all-time record. Wisconsin won the first game of this year's series, 4-1, in Mankato, Minn. The second game was postponed after a water main break near All Seasons Arena on Oct. 22.
The first period was uneventful with five penalties and nearly even shots. Returning after the first intermission, Zaugg combined with Sara Bauer and Sharon Cole on the power-play to put the Badgers on the board at 1:17 in the second period. The teams skated through the rest of the period without another score.
The flood gates opened in the third. Zaugg scored her second power-play goal at 3:15. Junior Bobbi-Jo Slusar followed with another at 4:41 and just moments later senior Cyndy Kenyon netted her fourth goal of the season at 5:18. Now ahead by four, the Badgers were whistled for slashing at 11:12.
The Mavericks saw an opportunity and capitalized with a power-play goal from freshman sensation Maggie Fisher. It would be the only let-up in the Badger defense as the offense went on the exploit the Maverick net.
In a showing of strength and determination, freshman Erika Lawler struggled against an MSU defender before overpowering her and getting the shot off. Her unassisted goal was scored at 13:20. Closing out the night's scoring was Heidi Kletzien at 16:45 and Tia Hanson on the power-play at 18:12.
Starting in net for the Badgers was junior Christine Dufour with 16 saves while MSU's Brit Kehler stopped 31 shots.
Originally scheduled as a bye week for Wisconsin, the Minnesota State match-up will be the only competition UW will see over the weekend, in order for the team to rest up and play Minnesota Nov. 18-19.
