Wisconsin Completes Sweep of Bemidji State
December 04, 2005 | Women's Hockey
The No. 4 Wisconsin women's hockey team completed its sixth season sweep with a 4-1 win over Bemidji State Sunday at the Rams Sports Arena in Roseau, Minn. The Badgers improved to 14-2-0 and 11-1-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Bemidji State dropped to 3-11-2 overall and 2-10-0 in the conference.
Redshirt freshman Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) got her first collegiate start and made 26 saves in first win for the Badgers.
Wisconsin faced a revitalized Bemidji State in the first period. BSU goalie Emily Brookshaw and the Beaver defense kept Wisconsin off the board until 13:16 when Angie Keseley (St. Louis Park, Minn.) slipped the puck in the net amid chaos around the crease. BSU was unaffected and responded with a goal just a minute later at 14:22. Nikki Burish scored her fourth season goal at 16:18 to put the Badgers up by one heading into the first intermission.
In the second, the Badgers weathered a five-on-three situation early in the period while Bemidji State turned up its offense and out shot the Badgers 14-7 in the period. BSU was assessed a hooking penalty at 19:57 in the period to give the Badgers a power play to start the final period.
That power play proved positive for the Badgers as captain Sharon Cole (Bloomington, Minn.) scored 38 seconds into the third period. Freshman Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) followed with the fourth and final goal for the Badgers at 2:11.
Wisconsin out shot the Beavers 34-27 with Brookshaw making 30 stops in her sixth season loss.
The Badgers continue their road stint with a trip to No. 2 Minnesota Duluth next weekend. It will be the second series for the teams this season. Wisconsin hosted the Bulldogs in the season opener Oct. 8-9 at the Kohl Center. Wisconsin dropped the first game, 5-2, but rebounded with an exciting 4-3 overtime victory for the split. The games are set for 7:07 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at the DECC in Duluth, Minn.
