Former Badger defensive end Jonathan Welsh, an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 2004, was selected in the fifth round (148th pick overall) of the National Football League Draft by the Indianapolis Colts Sunday afternoon.
Welsh, who played in 47 of a possible 51 games, including 25 starts during his Wisconsin career, had 22 tackles for loss for 116 yards, including 13 quarterback sacks for 105 yards in four seasons. Welsh made 27 tackles in 2004, including 4.5 tackles for loss.
A native of Houston, Welsh joins fellow former Badger defensive end Erasmus James as 2004 draft choices. It marks the first time during the Alvarez era at Wisconsin that two Badger defensive linemen have been chosen in one NFL draft.
