Records Set in UW Games vs. Minnesota
October 11, 2006 | Football
Plenty of exciting moments have happened throughout the series between the University of Wisconsin and Minnesota football teams (i.e. think back to the 2005 game). Beyond the emotional level are the statistics, and many UW records have been set in these contests. Following is a list of those records by category:
All-Purpose Yardage
Though Ron Dayne set the single-game record with 347 yards against Hawaii in 1996, five of the top 10 happened in games vs. Minnesota. Ira Matthews racked up 312 yards (134 rushing, 54 receiving and 124 returning) in the 1978 game to be ranked No. 4 on the list. No. 5 are Billy Marek (304 in 1974) and Ron Dayne (304 in 1996), No. 7 is Anthony Davis with 301 in 2002 and No. 10 is Aaron Stecker with 258 in 1995.
Passing Yards, Completions
Darrell Bevell owns the mark for most passing yards in one game, throwing for 423 vs. the Gophers in 1993. His 31 completions in that contest rank third all-time at UW.
Receiving Yards, Receptions
In 1993, Lee DeRamus notched 156 receiving yards vs. Minnesota, tying him for 17th on the records list. Lee Evans in No. 19 with his 151 yards in 2001.
In a 15-way tie for 10th on the receptions list with nine apiece are Tom McCauley (1967), DeRamus (1993), J.C. Dawkins (1993) and Evans (2001).
Rushing Yards, Attempts, Touchdowns
Nos. 2-4 for most rushing yards for a single game are Billy Marek (304 in 1974 vs. Minnesota), Anthony Davis (301 in 2002) and Ron Dayne (297 in 1996). Those games for Marek and Davis saw them each score five rushing touchdowns, putting them in a four-way tie for most in a single game at UW. Meanwhile, Dayne's game in '96 saw him rush 50 times, a school record.
Field Goals, Field Goals Attempted, Extra Points
Surprisingly, the first two records aren't held by the same person, though both were set against Minnesota. In 1976, Vince Lamia kicked four through the uprights, and Matt Davenport accomplished the same feat in 1998, to put them in a seven-way tie for first. Jim Bakken's six FG attempts in 1961 are tied for No. 1 (Robb Mehring's five attempts in 1988 are tied for No. 3).
A look at the records book reveals that a UW kicker has converted eight extra point attempts nine times. Kevin Rohde accomplished that feat against Minnesota in 1983.
Team Offense
The 605 yards UW racked up against Minnesota in 1993 are the seventh most in school history; however, the 423 passing yards in that game are a record. In terms of rushing, 435 yards (No. 7) were accumulated in the 1974 contest. The 56 points scored by the Badgers in the 1983 game are the eighth most all-time.
Team Defense
Two of the six times that Wisconsin has held a team to zero passing yards came against Minnesota, the first time in 1972, then again in 1977. Also, the most interceptions the Badgers have racked up in one game were seven vs. the Gophers in 1954.
Miscellaneous
Wisconsin has had three 100-yard rushing duos against Minnesota'Anthony Davis (301) and Brooks Bollinger (112) in 2002, Ira Matthews (134) and Tom Stauss (113) in 1978, and Alan Ameche (125) and Harland Carl (102) in 1952.
UW has had penalty-free games many times in its history, but the most recent came in 1992 against UM.
Not one of the best records out there, but the Badgers' most number of fumbles lost is six, and they have done it twice, including against Minnesota in 1964.
