A bronze likeness of University of Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez was unveiled today at Gate 1 just outside Camp Randall Stadium.
'I'm thrilled that we are able to honor Barry in this way,' UW Chancellor John Wiley said. 'He has made very significant contributions to not only the athletic department, but the University as a whole. This sculpture will serve as a permanent reminder of his commitment to excellence as Wisconsin's football coach. '
The announcement that a sculpture honoring Alvarez was commissioned took place last November after the 2005 final season home game against Iowa. Then acting provost Virginia Sapiro, speaking on behalf of the Chancellor's office, told a sellout crowd that a bronze sculpture would be placed on the grounds of the stadium.
The Silicon Bronze, life-sized sculpture is six feet, one inch tall and weighs approximately 300 pounds. The sculptor was Lou Cella of Timeless Creations, Inc., who created the piece at The Studio of Rotblatt Amrany in Highwood, Ill.
A similar ceremony will take place Nov. 17 when a life-size sculpture honoring former UW athlete and athletic director Pat Richter will be unveiled.
