Badgers and Gophers End in 3-3 Tie
October 22, 2006 | Women's Hockey
A late third period goal scored by Minnesota's Gigi Marvin brought the Wisconsin women's hockey game into a 5-minute overtime period Sunday at the Kohl Center. No goals were scored in the overtime period, resulting in a 3-3 tie. The Badgers currently stand 7-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Minnesota moves to 3-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference.
At the 8:38 mark of the opening period, the Gophers got on the board first with a goal by Andrea Nichols, her fifth of the season. Wisconsin responded approximately two minutes later when sophomore Kayla Hagen (Crosslake, Minn.) handled the puck around the back of the net and swept it past the right skate of Gopher goalie Brittony Chartier. The unassisted goal was her first of the season.
After a scoreless second period, the Badgers returned to the ice in full force. Wisconsin scored 7:09 in after Erika Lawler's (Fitchburg, Mass.) shot from between the circles was redirected by linemate Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) into the net, putting the Badgers up 2-1. The goal by the freshman was her sixth as a Badger.
With less than eight minutes to play, Phoebe Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa.) tallied her second goal of the season off a rebound shot taken by Hagen. The goal gave the Badgers a two point lead over the Gophers. Heidi Kletzien (Manitowoc, Wis.) was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Minnesota did not waver and with less than three minutes left in the game, scored off a soft shot between the circles, to trail by one. Just 1:10 later, with two seconds remaining on the clock, the Gophers swung the puck around the right boards, catching sophomore Marvin just outside the crease on the right side. With an extra-skater advantage, Minnesota 's Marvin fired the puck and notched a goal to keep Minnesota in the game, before heading into overtime.
A scoreless overtime period ended the weekend series in a 3-3 tie. The tie ended Wisconsin's 19-game school-record winning streak, but extended the Badgers ' school-record unbeaten streak to 20.
The Gophers out-shot the Badgers 29 to 21 in the third period, taking five more shots-on-goal than their opponents. Wisconsin's six penalties left them one skater short for 12 minutes of play, while Minnesota recorded only two penalties equaling four minutes.
In goal for Wisconsin, sophomore Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) recorded her first tie game of her Badger career. Vetter had 26 saves in the game. Minnesota's Chartier stopped 18 shots taken by the UW, three of which came in the overtime period.
Wisconsin returns to the Kohl Center in one week to take on conference foe North Dakota. The Friday and Sunday games will begin at 2 p.m. Additionally, Friday marks the annual Kid 's Day at the Kohl, where kids can sign up at www.buckysbuddies.com to participate in a variety of activities.
