
No. 1 Wisconsin Shuts Out UND, 7-0

Four power-play goals contributed to the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team 's victory over conference foe North Dakota Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center. The Badgers (9-0-1 overall, 7-0-1 WCHA) extend their unbeaten streak, having not lost a game since February 10 against Minnesota. The UW has won a school-record 22 consecutive games. UND drops to 2-6-0 overall and 0-6-0 in the conference.
The eventual game-winning goal scored by Wisconsin's Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alberta) occurred just 7:24 in the opening period. On the power play, Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) fired the puck from the point hitting Angie Keseley's (St. Louis Park, Minn.) skate. The puck went on-net and Mikkelson was there to tap it in on the rebound. The goal was Mikkelson's first of the season. The assist by Keseley was her first of three in the game and Lawler's ninth of the season.
Two more goals were scored by the Badgers in the first period, one of which was on the power play. One lone goal, the third power-play goal of the game, was scored in the second period by Jinelle Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.) with less than five minutes remaining on the clock. The goal was Zaugg's second of the game and 12th of the season. The third-year skater currently leads the nation in goal scoring.
The Wisconsin squad marked three additional goals in the final period of play. Of note, only 14 seconds passed between the fifth goal notched by Lawler and the sixth goal netted by Sara Bauer (St. Catharines, Ontario). A final power-play goal was scored by Phoebe Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at the 10 minute mark. It was her third goal of the season.
While the UW notably went 4-for-13 on the power play, the cardinal and white additionally out-shot UND 43-7. Wisconsin kept the Fighting Sioux to less than five shots per period.
In the third period, rookie goalie Alannah McCready (Blaine, Minn.) saw action for the first time as a Badger. She recorded one save in almost nine minutes of play. Sophomore Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) stopped six shots and improved to 4-0-1 this season.
Between the pipes for the Fighting Sioux, Brittany Kirkham saved 34 shots and Jody Karnik recorded two saves.
The Badgers hit the road for the second time this season to take on Minnesota State. The conference battle will take place at All Season's Arena. Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday's match-up begins at 3 p.m.
