UW Completes Fall Season
November 12, 2006 | Women's Rowing
The Wisconsin women's rowers competed at the Rivanna Romp Sunday in Charlottesville, Va. The event didn't exactly go as planned for the Badgers.
The first event of the day was the varsity eights. Everything started out fine, but the teams soon found out that the timing devices had not worked, resulting in no times for the boats. The coaches met and decided to re-race the eights, which didn't allow the fours or pairs to race.
The eights then raced again and were off to a pretty good start, when unfortunate luck struck again. Both the Wisconsin A and B boats collided with Virginia boats costing both teams precious time.
'We had a stronger performance I the second run, but there are things in racing that you can't predict,' said head coach Bebe Bryans. 'In rowing there are no penalties or rewards when collisions happen, and today was just an unfortunate day.'
The Wisconsin A boat ended up finishing in 12th (13:59.1), while the B boat placed 15th in the time of 14:05.38. Virginia won the event (13:12.43), Ohio State took second (13:27) and Tennessee (13:29) rounded out the top three.
'We got a good idea of where we stand, and we know what we need to work on for the winter,' said Byrans.
The women's teams are now on their winter breaks, and will not be rowing again until April 7, 2007.
