Unbeaten Streak Ends at 26 Games
November 24, 2006 | Women's Hockey
The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team was unable to overcome two second-period goals by No. 10 Minnesota Duluth as it fell to the Bulldogs 2-0 Friday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
The loss snapped a school-record 26-game unbeaten streak for Wisconsin (13-1-1 overall, 11-1-1 WCHA), which was 25-0-1 in that stretch. The last time the Badgers lost was also the last time they were shut out at home, a 3-0 defeat to Minnesota.
Sophomore Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) stopped 17 shots in the game and absorbed just her second career loss. Vetter's only other loss came at St. Cloud on Feb. 4, 2006.
Vetter's counterpart, Kim Martin, made 25 saves to earn the win for Minnesota Duluth (9-3-1, 9-3-1). The win snapped a four-game winless streak for UMD.
After a scoreless first period, Jessica Koizumi gave UMD a 1-0 lead 1:32 into the second. Myriam Trepanier fired a shot from the right point that Koizumi tipped past Vetter from between the circles for her 12th goal of the season.
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead midway through the second when Karine Demeule attempted a wrap-around. Although the play was not initially ruled a goal, it was reviewed and Demeule was credited with her fifth goal of the season.
The last 20 minutes saw a tightly played contest in which only five shots on goal were recorded. The Badgers out-shot the Bulldogs 3-2 in the third and 25-19 in the game.
UW finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play while UMD was 1-for-4.
