Wisconsin Shuts Out UMD, 1-0
November 25, 2006 | Women's Hockey
Jinelle Zaugg's goal in the second period proved to be the difference as the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team earned a WCHA series split with a 1-0 shutout of No. 10 Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon at the Kohl Center.
Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.) snapped a three-game goalless drought with her team-leading 14th goal of the season late in the second period. The goal was the 50th of her career, making her just the fifth Badger to reach that milestone.
Senior goalie Christine Dufour (Rivere-du-Loup, Quebec) took care of the rest, making 11 saves for the Badgers (14-1-1 overall, 12-1-1 WCHA) including a save on a penalty shot by Michaela Lanzl in the first period.
Lanzl earned the rare one-on-one opportunity when she was tripped up by UW defender Kristen Witting (Beloit, Wis.) while on a breakaway at 16:57 of the first. Lanzl skated in, tried to deke and lost control of the puck in what proved to be the best scoring chance of the game for UMD (9-4-1, 9-4-1).
The penalty shot by Lanzl was the first against UW since Jan. 7, 2006 when then-freshman Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) stopped Jessica Snelgrove in the second period at Wayne State.
The game remained scoreless until Zaugg redirected a shot from the point by senior Bobbi-Jo Slusar (Swift Current, Saskatchewan). Sara Bauer (St. Catharines, Ontario) also notched an assist on the power-play, game-winning goal.
The Badgers finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play while the Bulldogs went 0-for-2.
Wisconsin out-shot Minnesota Duluth 33-11 in the contest, the fewest shots UW has ever allowed to UMD. The previous low came on Nov. 3, 2001 when the then-No. 1 Bulldogs fired just 15 shots on goal. UMD won that contest 2-1 in overtime.
In the final 80 minutes of the series, the Badgers held the Bulldogs to 13 shots. UMD entered the weekend averaging 34.6 shots per game.
The game marked only the second time that Wisconsin has shut-out Minnesota Duluth. UW also shut-out UMD 2-0 on Jan. 14, 2005.
The Badgers return to the ice when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., to take on Robert Morris Dec. 1-2. Faceoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday and 2:00 p.m. CT on Saturday.
