November 29, 2006 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The University of Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams will take part in their biggest meet of the semester, the Texas Invitational, Thursday-Saturday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. Preliminary rounds begin at 10 a.m. each day, and final rounds are held at 6 p.m.
'This is definitely our focus of the semester,' head coach Eric Hansen said. 'Our women especially will come in with expectations of earning a lot of NCAA qualifying times. In fact, we expect to swim season bests this weekend.'
Though the goal of the Badgers, most of whom are peaking in their training right now, is to earn as many NCAA 'A' cuts as possible, they will have some stiff competition'on the women's side, No. 1 Stanford and No. 2 Arizona, among other top-25 teams, will be there, and on the men's side, No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Stanford will be competing.
Still, Wisconsin has a history of success at this meet. In 2005, Andrea Wiesner qualified for the NCAA championships in the 200-yard IM (2:00.06) and the 400-yard IM (4:14.25), and Susan Johnson qualified for the 200-yard backstroke by reeling off a time of 1:57.41. Meanwhile, Scott Rice notched an NCAA 'B' time in the 200-yard butterfly (1:47.69).
In overall standings, the UW women's team took third with 525 points, and the men's team finished eighth with 117. Arizona won the meet on both sides.
