November 03, 2006 | Men's Swimming & Diving
The University of Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams both fell to the Arizona Wildcats Friday at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson, Ariz. The men fell by a score of 155-134 while the women lost 158.50 to 132.50.
Despite winning six events, the men could not hold off Arizona. Sophomores Mike Hopkins and Scott Rice each took the title in both the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.25) and the 100-yard butterfly (50.20), respectively. Rice also won the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.16).
'We got off to a bit of a slow start but turned it around and we had some good wins,' said head coach Eric Hansen.
Fellow sophomore Eric Johnson was victorious in the 100-yard (57.55) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.24). Wisconsin also placed first in the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:24.98.
'Eric [Johnson] was a strong winner,' said Hansen, 'and he had some really strong performances for us.'
Like the men, the Badger women also claimed titles in six separate events. Sophomore Yi Ting Siow led UW as she placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.36) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.17).
'Once again Yi Ting swam real well for us and we also had some other solid performances,' said Hansen.
'I am pretty pleased,' added Hansen, 'but I think we have a ways to go.'
Freshman Gabby Maddalena took first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:03.80. Finally, in the last women's swimming event of the afternoon it was Andrea Wiesner whose 4:26.98 time earned her a first place finish.
The Wisconsin men's diving team was led by freshman Tim Feyeresen and sophomore Kelly Todd. On the 1-meter board Feyeresen took second scoring a 249.97. Todd also earned a second place finish as he scored a 271.27 on the 3-meter board. For the women, it was all Jenny Hawkins as she won the 1-meter board with a 249.06 and second on the 3-meter board with a 261.67.
The Badgers are back in action tomorrow as they compete in an exhibition back at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center at 11 a.m. CST.
Next weekend both the men's and women's teams will travel to Evanston, Ill. to compete in a dual-meet vs. Northwestern at 4 p.m. Friday.
