Wisconsin Completes Sweep of MSU
November 04, 2006 | Women's Hockey
The top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team scored five unanswered goals to run away with a 6-1 win over Minnesota State Saturday afternoon at All Seasons Arena.
Jinelle Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.), Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alberta), Phoebe Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Kyla Sanders (Parrish, Fla.) and Angie Keseley (St. Louis Park, Minn.) all scored as the Badgers (11-0-1 overall, 9-0-1 WCHA) extended their school-record unbeaten streak to 24 games (23-0-1).
Playing in back-to-back games for only the second time this season, sophomore goalie Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) made 28 saves to notch her seventh victory.
Vetter's counterpart, Britni Kehler, stopped 46 shots for the Mavericks (3-6-0, 2-6-0) before being replaced in the third period. Wisconsin out-shot Minnesota State 59-29 in the contest.
Zaugg gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead 4:11 into the contest with her 13th goal of the season. Senior Sara Bauer (St. Catharines, Ontario) won an offensive-zone faceoff back to Zaugg, who beat Kehler five-hole.
Zaugg now has 49 career goals and needs just one more to become the fifth Badger to reach 50 in her career. She has now scored at least one goal in 10 of Wisconsin's 12 games this season.
Minnesota State tied the game at the 7:29 mark of the first period. After Vetter stopped an initial shot by Ashley Young, Maggie Fisher tapped the rebound into an open net for her fifth goal of the season.
Mikkelson put Wisconsin back in front with her third goal of the season 14:11 into the second frame. The senior ripped a slap shot from the right circle just under the crossbar. Fellow seniors Bobbi-Jo Slusar (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) and Bauer earned assists on the power-play goal.
Eighty-one seconds later, Monteleone opened UW's lead to 3-1. During a scramble in front of the MSU cage, Monteleone found the loose puck and knocked it in for her fourth goal of the year. Sophomore Kayla Hagen picked up an assist for her 10th career point.
Wisconsin put the game out of reach with three quick goals midway through the third period. Bauer scored at the 9:05 mark followed by Sanders at 10:50 and Keseley at 11:58. All three goals were power-play markers.
Wisconsin finished the game 4-for-7 on the power play while Minnesota State was 0-for-4.
The Badgers are off next weekend before heading to Bemidji State Nov. 18-19. Meanwhile, Zaugg, Erika Lawler, Slusar and head coach Mark Johnson will all be in Kitchener, Ontario to take part in the Four Nations Cup Nov. 7-12.
Zaugg, Lawler and Johnson will represent the United States while Slusar, as well as former Badger and current undergraduate assistant Carla MacLeod, will play for Canada. UW Director of Hockey Operations Paul Hickman will serve as the Equipment Manager for Team USA.
