Bauer Ties Career Point Record
December 01, 2006 | Women's Hockey
Senior Sara Bauer scored two goals and two assists to tie the UW career point record and lead the No. 2 Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 10-0 victory over Robert Morris Friday evening at the RMU Island Sports Center.
Bauer (St. Catharines, Ontario) pushed her career point total to 177 (65 goals, 112 assists), matching Meghan Hunter's career total. Hunter, who played at Wisconsin from 2000-04, left UW with 84 goals and 93 assists.
Junior Jinelle Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.) recorded four assists while senior Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alberta), sophomores Angie Keseley (St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.) and freshman Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) all tallied three points as the Badgers (15-1-1 overall, 12-1-1 WCHA) notched their highest goal output since a 10-3 win over Bemidji State on Dec. 3, 2005.
Sophomore goalie Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) made 11 saves to earn her second shutout of the season.
On the other end, Brianne McLaughlin and Heather Rossi combined to stop 28 shots for the Colonials (5-8-2).
Mikkelson put the Badgers up 1-0 6:37 into the opening period when she flipped a rebound over McLaughlin. The lead was doubled to two goals at the 13:31 mark when Mikkelson 's shot from the right point hit traffic in front and freshman Kyla Sanders (Parrish, Fla.) found it in the low slot for her seventh goal of the season.
UW scored two more times before the end of the first period to take a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. First Bauer beat McLaughlin with a shot from the left circle at the 18:05 mark, then Keseley finished off a terrific passing sequence in the offensive zone with 10 seconds left in the period.
Freshman Emily Kranz (Waukesha, Wis.) tallied her first career goal 12:45 into the second to put UW up 5-0. Kranz went on to add her second career goal late in the third period to close out the scoring.
Bauer caught up to Hunter's record with points on Wisconsin's sixth, seventh and eighth goals. She notched an assist on Sanders' second goal of the game at 13:55 of the second, then one-timed a pass from Mikkelson four minutes later for her 176th career point.
Bauer tied the career point record 1:17 into the third period when Bobbi-Jo Slusar (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) chipped Bauer's centering pass over Rossi to put the Badgers ahead 8-0.
The assist on Slusar's goal moved Bauer into a tie for ninth place on the NCAA career point list with Meghan Hunter. She is just one point behind St. Lawrence's Rebecca Russell for eighth place.
Duggan and Kranz went on to score in the final six minutes to complete the 10-0 win. The margin of victory was the largest for Wisconsin since the Badgers beat Wayne State 11-0 on Oct. 9, 2004.
Friday's game was part of 'Skate for the Cure,' a College Hockey America-wide event held to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.
The Badgers and Colonials conclude their series Saturday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports Center. Faceoff is set for 1:05 p.m. CT.
